Contest Rules and Guidelines:

We are so happy to announce that FACCGN’s second annual Parol design contest entitled “Maligayang Parol '' Lantern Design Competition kicks off this November 2022. Staying true to our organization's calling to encourage cultural entrepreneurship and spur creativity within our community. Nothing encapsulates the Philippine Christmas traditions of joy, pride, and community like the flashing lights and dazzling colors of the timeless Parol and we invite you to join us in our celebration!

  1. We invite all Las Vegas residents to take part in the competition and only ask for a valid address during the registration process. A non-refundable entry fee of $20.00 will be charged per entry with multiple entries allowed per residence. Each additional entry will need to pay the full entry fee. 

While the beauty of a traditional Parol cannot be overstated the magic of the Holiday season is that we can merge traditions and cultures to make a truly inclusive celebratory experience while still staying true to where we come from.

2. Below are some guidelines for material and structure design but ultimately you are the creator if it can be displayed at our venue we will accept it! 

  • Construction material should be lightweight, recycled (upcycled), biodegradable, or add emphasis to sustainability and creative waste management in some way.   

  • The shape of the entry should conform to the traditional Philippine Parol which is a five or more-pointed star with lights and colors. Two fringes or tails complement the stars and should be included in your designs.

  • A written (or recorded) statement highlighting the creative and sustainable nature of your design as well as what Christmas means to you should be included with your submission.  

  • Parols should be between 1 and 3 feet across excluding the tails and must include a loop or hook by which they can be hung. Battery-operated LED lights(for fire safety) and movable parts can be added but must be able to be moved and relocated easily. 

  • The final composition must be homemade but individual parts may be purchased, crafted, or recycled as needed. Any decorations can be attached with an adhesive that is safe for indoor use; sewn, glued, stapled, tied, etc. 

3. We will conduct our first round of judging on the FACCGN-designated online polling site where the participants can share more about their entries and inspirations. Contestants will submit 3 to 5 photos of their Parols including front, side, and back shots, and their supporting statement of creativity to our contest portal. Content and images can be emailed to info@faccgn.org which will be uploaded by our parol Committee to our Facebook page.

4. The parol entries will be displayed at the venue at 63FIFTY FIL AM Central, Suites 525 H & E, 3700 S Maryland Pkwy 2nd Floor, Las Vegas, NV 89169 and will be exhibited to the viewing public and by the select Judging Panel. The participant will be asked to bring their entry/ies for mounting and display and will be notified by email or by the nominating member of the chamber.

5. We will announce the contest winners during the Awarding Ceremony on December 18, 2022, during the FACCGN Christmas Party at 63FIFTY during the FACCGN Christmas Party and General Membership/Networking Mixer. All participants will receive a Certificate of Participation during the award ceremonies and can opt for pictures to be featured on all our Social Media channels and in community news publications like Asian Journal and Philippine Times of Southern Nevada.

6. Judging Criteria:

Creativity/Originality/Material 40%

Workmanship/Craftsmanship 30%

Symbolism/Relevance          30%

10. Prizes: Cash prizes will be awarded to the top 3 entries selected from final  20 parols displayed during the venue. Live judging will be conducted by a select panel of judges who will be present at the venue. The prizes are as follows:

1st Place –  $300

2nd Place - $200

3rd Place – $100

Please fill out and submit Contest Registration Form no later than Monday, 12 December 2022. Remember, the earlier you submit your entries, the more chances you get more online votes. Participants are encouraged to campaign for their entries but the final selection will still be based on the criteria set and decided on by a Panel of Judges.
